This article is a MUST read for all concerned pet owners!  You will be outraged by the continuing potentially lethal incompetence of the FDA. I have extracted two paragraphs but urge all to read the entire article. Note the e-mail to the writer of the article...just hours before Natural Balance recalled their rice protein products. Also urge all to click on the links and read more about the bumbling FEMA...ooooops I mean FDA

HERE IS THE MEMO FROM THE FDA TO THE WRITER OF THE ARTICLE NOTE THE DATE...ONLY HOURS LATER...RICE GLUTEN PRODUCTS WERE RECALLED.

Rice gluten and corn gluten are not being recalled. The latest information we have is on our website.  It is up to date.

EXTRACTS FROM THE ARTICLE

Agricultural products distributor Wilbur-Ellis has issued a nationwide recall of all lots of rice protein concentrate, after the Food and Drug Administration found additional samples testing positive for melamine. The company is now urging all pet food manufacturers using its rice protein concentrate to recall any pet food that may still be on supermarket shelves.

Last Sunday, April 15, Wilbur-Ellis notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that a single bag in a recent shipment of rice protein concentrate from its Chinese supplier, Binzhou Futian Biology Technology Co. Ltd., had tested positive for melamine.  Unlike the other white-colored bags in that shipment, the bag in question was pink and had the word 'melamine' stenciled upon it.

You'd think, just maybe, the pink bag with the word "melamine" on it might have been a bit of a giveaway, yet on Tuesday, April 17, when I asked the FDA to confirm or deny an impending recall, and specifically mentioned that my source said "the rice protein concentrate has 'melamine' listed on the bag," the FDA categorically denied the rumor http://www.horsesass.org/wp-trackback.php?p=2816,  insisting that the information on its website "is up to date."

Within hours, Natural Balance recalled products due to melamine-tainted rice protein concentrate.

Menu Foods CFO sold stock before pet food recall
Updated Tue. Apr. 10 2007 7:23 AM ET
CTV.ca News Staff
The chief financial officer of Menu Foods Income Fund says it was a "horrible coincidence" that he sold nearly half his units in the pet food company less than three weeks before a massive product recall.
Insider trading reports confirm that Mark Wiens sold 14,000 units, or 45 per cent of his stock, for $102,900 on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27, reports The Globe and Mail. The shares would be worth $62,440 at current prices.
Wiens still owned 17,193 units and options to purchase 101,812 units after the sale.
"It's a horrible coincidence, yes . . ." Wiens told The Globe.
"I hold myself to the highest ethical and moral standards possible. I wouldn't do anything to imperil the high governance standards that I demand of myself or anybody in the company."

Per the story below....

the founder of a veterinary group said 5,000 to 10,000 pets may have fallen ill from eating the contaminated food, and 1,000 to 2,000 may have died.  The estimate was based on a Veterinary Information Network survey of 1,400 veterinarians among its 30,000 members. About one-third reported at least one case, said Paul Pion,  the network's founder. He cautioned that a final, definitive tally wasn't possible, and that even his estimate could be halved - or doubled.

Menu has well-proven what a loathsome company they are. Why should we trust them to make food?

They:

1. failed to properly test ingredients and therefore made contaminated food
2. delayed the recall for weeks....causing more deaths.
3. fed their test animals food they knew was bad...and killed many...they could have done toxicological tests.
4. keep their animals in horrible horrible situation

They are animal abusers...and should be prosecuted.

What can we do....let our voices be heard by the companies that are dealing with Menu...let them know we will not buy whatever Menu makes.

I received an email today with horrific information about the
terrible suffering of dogs and cats at Menu research facilities. It
made me sick to read it. Sweet dogs who can't even cry out because
their vocal cords have been cut... And cry they must because their legs
become trapped in the slat floors and are terribly injured. They are
left to suffer with infected teeth, untreated tumors and on and on...all
in the name of creating food for dogs we try so hard to save. But WHO
will save these wretched dogs?

It isn't bad enough that they have poisoned thousands of dogs and cats
-- they have to poison and torture more. Where does it stop?

You will cry when your read these articles. Please get mad enough to do
something! I have used Nutro since we started rescue. They buy from
Menu Foods and we are switching to a company who does not deal with
Menu. It will cost more and that will hurt, but I can't give Nutro one
more penny to pay these people to torture dogs in the name of feeding my
own.

Tell your pet food company that you aren't buying from anyone who buys
from Menu! Hit them where it hurts...right in their socio-pathic wallets!
