Dear
Friends,
One of our members is working on a project.
Called 2 Dogs 2000 Miles - Her friend, Luke Robinson, is
walking from Austin to Boston for cancer prevention (pets &
people) with his two Great Pyrenees, Hudson & Murphy.
As part of this project, they have
built a Memorial Wall honouring all of our ‘fur-kids’ who
have been stricken by this terrible disease.
There's no cost at all to have a
'stone' placed on the website. However, this also
serves a dual purpose of providing the information for the
first database of pet cancer ever which will help
researchers try to understand what's causing the cancers and
why certain cancers are more common in certain regions.
If you'd like to have your pet a
part of the Wall, email a photo (in any format) and the
following information: (1) Breed (2) Date of birth,
diagnosis, and (if applicable) passing (3) type of cancer
(4) zip code (not current - where the diagnosis occurred).
Your zip code will not be
shown...but needed to track areas with cancer...types etc.
Email
info and photos to:
memwall@2dogs2000miles.org
and in the subject put please list me on the memorial wall.
The money raised from the hike
will fund the first ever nationwide epidemiological canine
cancer study which will be managed by the Animal Cancer
Foundation (press release coming mid-January).
But this study has even more far
reaching implications. Most nearly all types of cancers in
pets are the same found in humans and increasingly, dogs
with cancers are being used as ideal models for research and
drug development. This has another benefit, too, of reducing
our dependency on lab animals (Note - no research funded by
ACF uses lab animals in any of their studies, only pets with
preexisting cancer).

COMMON DISEASES |

Below you will find links to
pages on several common canine afflictions. We can't cover
everything but we try to add to the site when we can. The pages
below will give you an overview of this disease and also contain
links to websites outside of CCO that will have more in-depth
information on the subject. Once outside our website you may hit
your browsers ‘back’ button to return to CCO. |

Do
you know... spaying and neutering is GOOD for your pets
health? Did you know it can greatly decrease the risk of
breast or prostate cancer in your dog especially if done
before the 1st heat cycle! However better late than never!
Because of the irresponsibility of so many pet owners,
there are far too many unwanted animals at shelters. 8
MILLION are killed every year because people will not spay
or neuter their pets. With not enough homes for these
animals, they will be destroyed.
Most shelters kill them
with gas or inject a needle in the heart, both are
horrible and painful slow death -(Read
more what happens when a pet is dropped at a shelter). They at least deserve a
painless humane death rather than suffer an archaic
one. After all they didn't ask to be born!
More on why
spay and neuter click here.
Please have your animals neutered/spayed to help end the
cycle of pet overpopulation, and PLEASE adopt from a
shelter or pound. Save a life!
Adopt
a pet! People
wonder were shelter pets come from. They are animals that
people bought and gave as gifts, only to find the
recipient didn't have enough time for it or it grew up
and wasn't 'cute' anymore. Some are dogs who are lost and
never claimed by owners. Some are puppies who were
unwanted litters dumped at the pound.. Some were abused
animals tortured by their owners and were seized by law.
Others had owners who died or were moving and no
longer able to care or keep the animal. Nothing is
wrong with 98% of the animals in shelters other than being
sad and depressed cause they were abandoned by the only
people they knew. Please
read this
before you decide to BUY a pet SHELTER
FACTS:
-There are approximately 6000 animal shelters in the USA
alone. Many die in gas chambers.
Read
about these 2 newspaper stories,
many are puppies and
pure breeds, just 'surplus' or puppy mill rejects.
Look at these sad and beautiful
faces that were not wanted. How could you buy
while these gorgeous animals die?
Click here and see what happens to animals that were pets-
no longer wanted, not adopted and dumped at shelters.
-Only 12% of cat owners and 18% of dog owners got their
animal from a shelter
-At many shelters 25%-30% of dogs are PUREBRED . Thinking
about buying a dog? Read about
PUPPY MILLS
and learn the truth about what is going on. If you really
love a dog ADOPT. Want a specific breed? Look online
for a PURE BREED RESCUES! Remember
for every dog bought one will die in a shelter. Also it
could be to your benefit to adopt through a rescue. You
have peace of mind that if it doesn't work out at anytime,
they always take back the animal and it will not be put
down!
